Wine and food

In Vlasotince, unlike other parts of Serbia, where people usually toast with rakija, it is not unusual to raise a glass of wine.

When the Leskovac-Vranje railway bypassed the town in 1886, the people of Vlasotince turned to wine growing as a way out of falling behind. In the record year of 1968, 1,200 wagons of grapes were picked.

The wine region

The years that made Vlasotince wine.

  1. 1886

The Leskovac-Vranje railway bypasses Vlasotince. The town turns to wine growing.

  2. 1895

Until that year the vineyards held only the native vine, plovdina. Then disease strikes the native vine.

  3. 1901

A district nursery opens in Vlasotince.

  4. 1930

A processing plant is built. The growers had joined together in a cooperative even earlier: the first wine growers’ cooperative was founded more than a hundred years ago.

  5. 1968

Record production: 1,200 wagons of grapes. After the Second World War, Vlasotince wine sold most in Slovenia, and sixty per cent of Belgrade’s caterers bought their wine from this wine region.

Today

The Tourist Organisation says that today there are not as many vines or winemakers as there once were: the work is done within families, but in recent years there have been new winemakers too.

The municipality’s well-known wine-growing areas, besides Vlasotince itself, are Dadince, Šišava, Donja Lomnica, Skrapež and others.

Since 2016 the International Wine Salon “Vina juga” has been held, hosted by the Wine Knights’ Order “Sveti Simeon” from Vlasotince.

The list of results of the 40th Wine Ball 2026 includes wines by Časlav Stojiljković, Vojkan Stojičić, Marko Stojiljković, Dragan Pešić, Velibor Milošević, Jovan Pečenković, Gordana Pešić and Vinarija Braća Adamović.
