People

Well-known people from Vlasotince and people whose lives are tied to the town: painters, industrialists, actors, a vojvoda and a screenwriter.

  1. Hristifor Crnilović

    Vlasotince, 1886 · Vlasotince, 1963

    Painter, researcher of traditional culture and collector, known as Kica. He was noticed at the Paris Salon in 1923. He first photographed members of his family, and from 1919 the people of Vlasotince, its old buildings and the panorama of the town.

    His ethnographic collection is now on display in Manak’s House (Manakova kuća) in Belgrade. Around 8 February, his birthday, the Cultural Centre holds the Days of Hristifor Crnilović, and 2026 marked 140 years since his birth.

  2. Vlada Ilić

    Vlasotince, 1882 · Belgrade, 1952

    Industrialist and Mayor of Belgrade from 10 January 1935 to 13 September 1939. He is best known for creating the first zoo in Belgrade, where his bust has stood since 2009.

    He was the youngest son of the wealthy Vlasotince man Kosta Ilić Mumdžija, whose capital opened a braid (gajtan) factory in the village of Kozare.

  3. Milan Nešić

    Soko Banja, 1886 · Belgrade, 1970

    Hydraulic engineer and Mayor of Belgrade. He grew up in Vlasotince, where he completed two years of primary school. On his initiative the Belgrade coat of arms was adopted in 1931, and it is still in use today.

  4. Vojislav S. Popović

    Industrialist

    Founder and first president of FK “Vlasina”, founded in 1920, one of the oldest clubs in the former Yugoslavia. In the same year he brought the first ball and football boots from Vienna.

    Six years later he was the main driving force behind the newspaper “Vlasina”, whose first issue came out on 16 September 1926; its first editor was the economist Milorad Marjanović.

  5. Miodrag Nagorni

    Vlasotince, 1932 · Belgrade, 2016

    Painter, printmaker and art teacher. His legacy is the Collection of Old Serbian Prints in the Local History Museum, and Gigina kuća (Gigi’s House) keeps his bequest with the portrait collection “Moji Vlasotinčani” (My People of Vlasotince).

  6. Siniša Pavić

    Sinj, 1933 · Vlasotince, 2024

    Serbian and Yugoslav screenwriter, who died in Vlasotince. At the end of the Wine Ball concert, the people of Vlasotince now traditionally pay tribute to him with a torch procession and the song “A, sad, adio”.

  7. Bogoljub Mitić Đoša

    Vlasotince, 1968 · Belgrade, 2017

    Actor, comedian and TV presenter. He started out as head of the Amateur Valter Theatre in Vlasotince. He is buried in Vlasotince.

  8. Predrag Smiljković

    Vlasotince, 1969

    Stage, television and film actor, known as Pepi. He is also known as Tihomir Stojković, called Tika Špic, “iz selo Stajkovce kod Vlasotince” (from the village of Stajkovce near Vlasotince).

  9. Ilija Petrović Strelja

    Gradište, 18th century · Ražanj, 1825

    A vojvoda (commander) of the First Serbian Uprising, born in Gradište, a village in the Vlasotince and Grdelica area. In folk literature he is known as Ilija Delija.

  10. Milan T. Valčić

    Merchant, banker and winemaker

    A pre-war merchant, banker and winemaker. After the First World War his private premises were rented out for a library, and the members brought chairs from their own homes.

    His heirs gave his house on Trg 8. oktobar to the town, and today it holds a branch of the town library. Milan Valčić Palace

  11. Predrag Filipović

    Athlete

    Serbian champion in 2007 in the 20-kilometre race walk, with a time of 1:28:33, and a competitor at the Summer Olympic Games in Athens in 2004.

Sinovi vlasotinački

In 2019 Nešić Embankment was decorated with the murals “Sinovi vlasotinački” (Sons of Vlasotince).

They show Goran Veličković Veličko, Dragiša Stanković Čelik, Hristifor Crnilović, Vlada Ilić, Boge Mrena, and Šurda and Bob from the TV series “Vruć vetar” (Hot Wind).

The locals are also called Rosuljci, after the sundew plant (rosulja).
