On 10 October Vlasotince marks the day this area was liberated in the Second World War, and also the month in which the people and army of the Kingdom of Serbia won the freedom of Vlasotince in the First World War.
The town was liberated on 10 October 1944, when the First Vlasotince Brigade entered it.
As JuGmedia wrote in 2025, Vlasotince is the only municipality that marks these two historical events on the same day, even though only three days separate them in the calendar.
The October Awards are presented every year on Liberation Day.
The Memorial Park “Staro groblje” (Old Cemetery), which its author, the architect Bogdan Bogdanović, named the Sanctuary, was built in 1975 to mark the day of the liberation of Vlasotince.
